Activity of New Zealand and America during the time of Springs composition
James Cook made his first visit to New Zealand in 1769, mapping the majority of the coastline. Over the next few decades more and more areas were discovered and named. Few British men were killed by the local Maori’s, the most significant deaths during this time were due to a type of influenza many of the locals caught, leading to 60% of the population to be wiped out.
Meanwhile, America was at the height of racism, with over 75,000 black slaves, this number then grew as large as 893,602 throughout the next hundred years. Tension was also high at this time between France, Spain, England and America, with at least five subsidiary level wars happening consistently throughout the century, including the French and the Indian war. However there were some progresses made; In 1752 Benjamin Franklin discovered electricity by using a kite and silk ribbon to effectively catch lightning in a jar. There was also a huge spike in population, going from 250,000 in 1700 to 5,308,483 in the beginning of the 1800’s.
